Why do I need
a special trailer for my Smart?
Standard
trailers have the axle(s) centered on the trailer bed. Since
the ForTwo has the engine mounted in the rear, the rear axle carries
55% of the weight of the vehicle. Thus, we mount the axle
appropriately to carry the load.
Besides, no one else in the US makes such a small car
hauler! |
 |
Do I really
need a trailer? Can't I use a towbar, or a dolly?
Sure, but a
towbar requires an expensive connection between the RV and car, and
may have to be removed to drive the car.
|
 |
What
about a tow-dolly?
A dolly
just ties down the front wheels of the car and drags the
rear.
It is important to note that neither option lets the RV be
backed up with the vehicle attached. You just can't do
it. |
 |
Its such a
small car, why don't you use 13" wheels like most small trailers do?
We use 15"
wheels with higher grade tires for better handling and safety.
|
 |
Can I open
both the doors when my car is on the trailer?
Yes. If
a spare tire is chosen as an option, it is mounted in front of the
car on the trailer tongue. If a toolbox is chosen as an option
in addition to the spare tire, the box is mounted on the tongue and
the spare tire is mounted on the passenger side in front of the
door. The door still opens.
|
|
Why don't you
put a winch on the trailer?
It is far
easier to drive onto the trailer than it would be to winch
the 1800
lb+ Smart up the ramp onto the trailer.
And, we have welded a
front wheel stop to the trailer bed. Just go slow and stop
when you feel a "bump".
|
 |
What is
needed to secure the car on the trailer?
Once you
feel the "bump" above, the car will naturally roll back a
bit if you take your foot off the gas. Just ease up to
the bump again and when you feel it, put on the parking
brake, put the car in Park, turn off the ignition and get
out.
Then you simply lay the tie-downs over the front tires and
hook it into the lift-up u-bolt behind each tire.
Finally, you tighten the straps with the built-in ratchet.
It is all quite easy and very secure.

|
Were are the
ramps stored?
Inside the
Smart Trailer! The ramps are easily slid out and back
in as needed.
|
|
What kind of
maintenance is needed for the Smart Trailer?
All that is
required is a simple 2-point lubrication every 6 months, or
so, depending on use.
